Family Camping in the rain with leaking tent

Camping in the Rain in North Wales – The Hadwins’ Family Camping Disaster!

Camping in the rain is all part of the adventure, isn’t it? Well, that’s what we thought before heading off for a seven-night family camping holiday in Criccieth, North Wales, with rain forecast for six of the seven days!

Being fairly experienced campers, we decided not to let a little British weather spoil our plans. After all, how bad could it really be?

As it turns out, pretty bad!

Following a very wet and windy four-and-a-half-hour journey, we arrived in Criccieth and managed to pitch our Vango Casa Lux tent in record time. Unfortunately, that was about as good as things got for the next five days.

With relentless rain, howling winds, two increasingly bored children and very little opportunity to venture outside, family camping quickly became a test of patience. To make matters worse, our tent developed a leak, leaving us with wet carpets, buckets catching drips and Scott seriously questioning his life choices!

Despite the weather, we were determined to make the most of North Wales. Whenever the rain stopped, we headed out to explore, visiting Criccieth Castle, Caernarfon, Snowdonia and the beautiful Welsh coastline.

Thankfully, the final two days brought something we’d almost forgotten existed – sunshine!

We finally enjoyed some proper family time exploring Aberdaron Beach, shrimping at Criccieth and visiting the stunning Black Rock Sands near Porthmadog. Those last two days reminded us why we love family holidays and just how beautiful North Wales can be.

So, did this camping holiday put us off camping for good? Not quite, but it certainly tested our enthusiasm! We discovered that even the most determined campers have their limits, especially when the rain never seems to stop.
